Where Is the Maldives
The Maldives is said to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. The smallest Asian country, it is an archipelago off of the Indian Ocean in the Laccadive Sea, near the southernmost part of Lakshawdeep, India.

This unique tourist attraction also forms a terrestrial ecoregion. The serenely beautiful region is approximately 35,000 km altogether.

Fishing and Tourism
Tourism and fishing are the two primary sources that drive the economy for the 300,000 inhabitants of the 185 islands here.

Tourism has only become a major industry since the early 1970’s, and is the largest source of revenue for the annual GDP of Maldives. Fishing also a major industry contributes to 15% of the overall GDP.

Language and People
The population of Maldives is essentially descended immigrants from the subcontinent of India and Sri Lanka.
They share one official common language called Dhivehi, while numerous dialects are used throughout the islands.

Caste and Culture of Maldives Islands
There is some degree of social stratification in the Maldives, as influenced by the more rigidly defined caste system of India.

While the nation is largely influenced by Islamic tradition and culture, a more liberal interpretation of their teachings have rendered the Maldives to have the highest divorce rate in the entire world.
